Summer Solstice at the Cleveland Art Museum 2015
This was No. 5 for me, I should
probably mention that so you'll know I have a framework that I'm
commenting from. So that said, it was a mixed bag. There were some
things better than years past, and some not as good.
I was both disappointed and
impressed by the music. Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 were good, I was
right at the stage and could just feel the sound wash over me. They
easily established why they are legends of the Afrobeat movement.
The Grassy Knoll were pretty
incredible as well, dark atmospheric electronica. Good stuff.
But what does it say about a event
that is suppose to offer cutting age world music that the two
standout acts are over 40 and 20 years old respectively. Isn't the
idea to find someone knew to blow us away?
The food was remarkably mediocre
and the alcohol selection was fairly pedestrian as well. There didnt
seem to be an attempt to do something special with either the food or
music, which is essentially one of the three tent poles of show like
this,
The art tours, fourteen and all,
were good. At least the three I went on, very interesting and just
short enough you feel you weren't missing the party. So kudos on
that.
The graphics playing across the
wall outside were as cool as ever, that always seems to come off
well.
The crazy dance floor is side was
great, I probably spent twenty minutes making the figures underneath
my feet move, that was cool. Good job on whoever thought about that.
It came down to this, I got my
tickets for the members discount of $45, tickets to Seun Kuti and The
Grassy Knoll would probably for about $45-50. So a fair price with
everyone else. But the premier event in Cleveland's nightlife scene
should blow me away, not be value priced.
It's been a while since I feel
they blew me away. I certainly didn't this year.
